1/52.

“A portrait of my son, once a week, every week, in 2014.”

This is my first ever 52 project. I’ve been looking forward to participating since last Summer.

Auggie: This morning was a result of a soaked diaper. I loved your sleepy eyes and the tiny drops of water on your face as you searched the tub for your favorite bath toys you received this Christmas. Once those curious eyes of yours met the toys, the disoriented look on your face became a smile.

Maxine M. Bland - I adore this little man, and your pictures are captivating . Thanks for sharing your little masterpiece with us

Mandy Fell - Really cute. Love that hair!

Abigail Rogers - Are they the ones I have him!!??

Noelani - Oh, he is just precious .. and growing up so quickly!

A 2013 review: part ll.

A 2013 review: part l.

This year has truly been incredible. Our sweet August turned 1, we had quality time spent with family who visited us in Alaska, and quality time spent with them again when we visited California. Auggie transformed from a baby that peacefully sits in his bouncer, to a mobile, crawling, feisty toddler with a huge personality.

But aside from my family and the personal side that I usually share on this blog, I wanted to take this time to share a review of my work from 2013.  I learned a lot when it comes to running a photography business. I made mistakes, I produced images I wasn’t very proud of, I got overwhelmed with the business aspects…Contracts, insurance, taxes, etc. A lot of the times I wanted to just throw my hands up in the air and quit. And for a few months during the year I would take breaks for this reason alone. But now I’m looking back through these sessions and at the emotion behind the pictures. A father coming home from deployment meeting his baby for the first time. A couple standing in front of friends and family and vowing to love and cherish one another for the rest of their lives. a 10 year anniversary. A young husband and wife wanting memories captured before he leaves for a one year deployment. I was able to photograph and give those memories to people…and I’m extremely proud of how far I’ve come and what I’ve produced. For years I brushed off the thought of being a serious photographer and considered myself not good enough or worthy. This year taught me one thing: This is what I was meant to do. This is my calling. And now I know I’ll never stop taking pictures.

In 2013 I opened up a small part of my heart with you with my son and my family. But in 2014 I’m looking forward to sharing something else I pour my heart into. Stay tuned for part ll!

Jenna Christine Rhodes - We were photographed by you too 🙁

NiCole Lynch - Nice work Jen …and stay the course because one of the best parts of what you’re doing is – making the moments last just a little bit longer for those you serve. Happy 2014.

Charity - the b&w of the soldier holding the baby…amazing. absolutely lovely collection of photos, Jen! happy new year. 🙂

Have a lovely week!

Auggie’s snow day.

I can’t believe the last time I posted in here was three months ago and we were just getting over the high of Auggie turning one. The boy is now 15, going on 16 months and is as independent, stubborn, and playful as can be. So many updates, I don’t even know where to start!

But as is tradition since we moved to Alaska, I had to take pictures on the first official snowfall of the year. (to see our past “first snow” posts, just look here and here.) So while he’s experienced a first snowfall before, he was still too itty bitty to enjoy it. This year I loved watching him stare around in wonder and blink rapidly as tiny snow flurries were weighing down his eyelashes. Seeing him stick his tongue out to taste the snow reminded me so much of myself when I was a little girl. His personality is mostly that of his fathers but once in a while he will do something that is “so Jen” and it just fills my heart with pride. Jimmy and I were feeling lazy and were certainly not dressed for pictures, but I’m so glad I managed to snap something to mark this tradition.

I’ll be hopefully posting a few more times until we say goodbye to snow in less than a week and hello to California sunshine, a Mexican cruise with just my husband and I, being reunited with family and meeting our beautiful niece for the first time. I can’t wait. My mood is so easily affected by the weather, and I couldn’t be happier to take a much needed vacation AND romantic getaway with my husband.

Coming up: A little photo update on recent sessions and work!

Rubin F. Alvarado - what kind of dog is Stanley? He is so cute!I love your snow photos… especially that first one!

Mandy Fell - love the one of him trying to catch snow on his tongue!

Amanda - He is so cute!

You’re so lucky getting to go back to CA for a visit. We haven’t been back in almost two years and I miss it.

Victoria / Justice Pirate - These shots are so cute! I love your first snowfall posts! I hope you and your family are very well! This little outfit Auggie is in, is so cute!

Sharon Mahurin Rivera - Love the pictures! He is so cute and having a ball in the snow.

Celebrating Auggie.

The house was full of so much love. My heart soared with pride as I watched him dig into his cake and give us his smile of approval. Like his daddy, the boy is a fan of chocolate. I can’t believe tomorrow he’ll be 13 months old. Our little boy doesn’t seem so little anymore. Even if he still looks it.

I think he knew something awesome was about to happen.

We gathered around him and sang happy birthday and I felt like my heart could burst.
